Scit-Scat-Scadoodle From Belgium With Love

Belgium: Witloof Bay - With Love Baby

After many years of failing to even qualify to the final, Belgium got some newfound confidence last year when Tom Dice and his guitar finished sixth – a very respectable result with a song they could be proud of. Everyone thought that Belgium had finally gotten back on track in the ESC, but unfortunately it looks like it may have been a lucky strike on their behalf. This year’s entry from Belgium is yet another disappointment. They’ve tried to be original by sending an a capella group, and they will definitely stand out and get themselves noticed, but not in a good way.

Witloof Bay is the name of the band, which is a play on words on the songs title “With Love Baby” and chicory which is a famous export item from Belgium. This clever little name is about the only thing interesting the entry has to offer. The song basically just repeats the same sentence over and over again while adding some beat boxing skit-skat-scaddooble-bibby-di-bop here and there. Witloof Bayas a group sound good together, but it takes about 30 seconds or less before this song starts to get really irritating.

It’s not the first time an a capella band tries their luck in the ESC. In 2006 Latvia sent vocal group Cosmos to defend their honor, and it didn’t go very well. 30 points and 16th place – and that song was way better than “With Love”. A capella is an acquired taste which doesn’t a small group of fans, and it needs to be very good in order to make an impression on those who doesn’t really like this small genre. Witloof Bay as a group is not charming enough to create the necessary magic of an a capella number, and it’s not acceptable to come to the ESC with a song that must have taken less than 5 minutes to write.
