Poor choice from a bankrupt nation

Greece: Loucas Yiorkas feat. Stereo Mike "Watch My Dance"

I’ts time for Greece, and as usual I’m expecting some sexy dance act that is gonna make my living room steaming hot. But this year I’m extremely disappointed. The song is called “Watch My Dance”, but ironically there is not dancing what so ever. Greece is performing last in the first semi-final but you don’t have to wait until the intermission to go to the bathroom or make yourself a sandwich, because this year’s snooze-fest from Greece can easily be missed. Greece has never missed a final since the semi-final system was introduced, but this year it looks the big show on Saturday will be held without the feta-cheese loving nation. I doubt that 12 points from Cyprus will be enough to save this poor excuse of a song from total failure.

The song itself is a mixture of old classic Greek song and rap. Singer Loucas Yiorkas is originally from Cyprus, and won the Greek version of the talent show X-factor in 2009 and has since then performed all over Greece. Rapper Stereo-Mike is already well known in Greece, and in 2007 he won the Best Greek act of the year in the Greek Grammy Awards. Sounds interesting? Think again. In order for such a remedy to work there has to be some sort of connection between the two styles, but this sounds like two completely different songs that have randomly ended up together in some weird mixture. By themselves, Loucas Yiorkas song has some interesting sound to it, and has he managed to get rid of the rap part it could perhaps have been worthwhile to listen to. But I’m afraid it’s too late for that.

There is no way the ESC circus is coming to Athens next year, that’s for certain. Perhaps is this a conscious move on Greece’s behalf, since the country is basically bankrupt and hosting the ESC would have been quite the stretch for the Greek economy. But I still don’t think that justifies sending such a poorly constructed song to represent this fun-loving nation, they could have at least send some hot guy shaking his ass like last year. Not a winner – but at least entertaining to watch.
